Professor Alan Fowler has over 35 years of experience as a trainer, project manager, researcher and adviser to a wide range of development organisations. His current advisory work focuses on organisational reform of international civil society organisations, innovation and performance management in social investment and enterprise, capacity development and evaluation, and enhancing international scholarship on civil society. Clients in recent years include World Vision, Plan International, ActionAid International and several bilateral and multilateral donors.

Alan is an emeritus professor at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, was a visiting fellow at World Bank and a Ford Foundation programme officer. He has authored and co-edited several books, including the well known Earthscan Reader in NGO Management and its subsequent Companion as well as writing an organisational biography of ACORD, now a pan-African NGO.  In addition, are his contributions through presentations and numerous articles about development and civil society (see

In voluntary service, Alan has fulfilled governance roles in diverse international organisations, including elected positions as President of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) and as a Board member of CIVICUS.
